[ Here's another mysterious knock at your door, Jean--this time in the evening. Erwin probably looks a bit different than the last time Jean saw him; not only the arm, but he's somehow gaunter, even after some time spent recuperating in Luceti. The wounds on his face, at least, have healed almost entirely. ]

[He's not as shocked to see Erwin standing at his door as he had been to see Levi the week prior - already aware of the commander's return, Jean had anticipated that he would contact him directly soon enough. Yet, his eyes widen and his face pales as his gaze is drawn to the empty sleeve hanging at Erwin's right side. As he remembers to salute, he forces himself to look him maybe not in the eye, but in the general vicinity of his face.]

Er-- Good evening, Commander.

[ He's been getting that reaction a lot lately--he does intend to talk to Jean about his arm, among other things, but that can wait a moment. ]

Good evening to you as well, Jean.

[ Though Jean doesn't meet his gaze directly, Erwin remain intently focused. ]

May I come in? There are a few things I would like to discuss with you before tomorrow. I promise that I won't take up too much of your time.

Of course.

[He steps aside to grant Erwin entrance. Once the man passes through the door, he lets it fall shut behind them, and he hastily sets to clearing the table of his homework.]

[ If he hadn't come to discuss a serious matter, there might have been some amusement to be had in watching Jean scramble to pick up. As it is, however, Erwin intervenes quickly. ]

No need for that. My table is equally as messy.

[ Or it would be if Levi hadn't made him clean it up, at least. In any case, he doesn't mind, and he remains standing for the moment anyway. ]

You are prepared to travel tomorrow morning, I assume?

[Jean halts in his cleaning efforts, his hands pausing on the sloppy stack of books and papers he'd gathered, all things he'd been distracted from once John's announcement had broken. The Commander, at least, doesn't seem like he'll judge the state of Jean's apartment. Not that it's in bad shape, really - it just falls short of a certain somebody else's freakishly high standards. He straightens his back and steps away from the table.]

Yes, sir. I plan on waking up early to be ready to go.

I expected no less. I trust that you have everything you need in order.

[ Jean has been surviving well here on his own, after all. Erwin is sure he doesn't need his guidance in this matter. ]

It is not tomorrow's events that I wish to discuss with you, but events at home.

[ He glances at the table again--though more accurately, at the chairs beside it. ]

We should sit.

[He feels a small swell of pride to hear that his superior officer has faith in his competence. But he's thrown off when he realizes that it's not a matter of this world that Erwin has come to discuss, but a matter of the world they had left behind. He nods wordlessly, sharply, before drawing up a seat for himself.]

What's happening back home?

[His voice is tight, and he realizes that sounded much more like a demand than what is likely acceptable for him to address the commander of the entire Survey Corps with. He can't help but let his gaze shift to the empty sleeve hanging from Erwin's shoulder again. As gruesome as a missing arm is, there's a lot more that could be lost.]
